If you are a tradesman, renovator, home purchaser or interested party please read on.
Australia has the second-highest mesothelioma death rate in the world, trailing only the UK. Mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure is leaving its mark on our nation with more than 10,000 people succumbing to the diseases since the early 1980’s. According to cancer experts 25,000 additional people are expected to die from Mesothelioma over the next four decades. Crocidolite (blue) asbestos is one of the most toxic type of asbestos produced but is relatively uncommon due to the year manufacturing ceased in Australia, multiple asbestos studies suggest crocidolite may be responsible for more deaths than any other type of asbestos because its fibres are so thin, it is quite finely textured and looks very much like human hair with colour ranges from a dull slate grey to a very vibrant dark blue.
Models indicate that asbestos related deaths were 614 in 2014 with an expected medical peak expected to occur between 2014 and 2021 (now).
Now for the reality, this is a house in the Gippsland area, that vertical cladding is Crocidolite (blue) Asbestos, the property also contained a large amount of Chrysotile (white) asbestos!
During my initial consultation I was able to talk with the client to find out his plans for the property, in this case it involved extensive renovations. During the inspection I was able to identify areas of ACM, then take take samples to ensure the client was fully aware of what was present with his property purchase. This inevitably saved my client time, money and let him make an informed decision on his investment!
Without this type of knowledge and service my client would have been unaware of the significant dangers that he could have put himself, family members and tradesman in with these particular types of Asbestos.
